Both roads taken require shorts

At our house we always have time for a good book.

Especially in the summer.

And this, the littlest of the Little's, is meditating on
bravery in her new duds.

This bum, in these new shorts,
follows the big sisters everywhere.

One sister is timid and one is fearless.

It can be a bit confounding which way to roll.

Sometimes it needs profound consideration.
Some experimentation and careful observation.

Until this little Yu figures out her own hybrid

Or just decides to follow Nu's lead and
leap down life's stairs head first.

Her biggest sister Pu would counsel
"Stairs, stairs why must you go both up and down,
and be made of slivers, and be full of threat and beguiling mystery?!?
Oh stairs you betwixt and enrage me."

Only this counsel would be in sonnet form.
Or the length of War and Peace.
Or delivered in a concerned and high pitched dog whistle shriek.
Or all three.

And by then it might be time to smell the flowers.

Fall into the flowers.
Or get stung by Killer Bees.
Depending on your world view.

It's a lot to assess when you're not yet 2.

I think she's got a solid handle on the situation.

This little minx is definitely doing long division
on the inside of her diaper in the thick of night.

These sweet Echino purple shorts were made
with the ever brilliant Dana's new shorts pattern.
As always it's awesome, detailed, colourful and inspiring.
It made even, me who doesn't want to make stuff,
sew cute little kid shorts.

More than one pair...

What are you up to?

Hey sweet Bloggy peeps.

I apologize for abandoning our one-way love affair.

I'm just flying in for a quick update to say,
I'm having a little bloggy crisis.

(Oh hyperbole- how I love thee.
 More moment than crisis,
but CRISIS sounds so much more octane!!!)

As you may know,
we're moving in a month or so.
So, my studio has become pack central.
And...this is the hand-to-forehead part...
In the frenzy of pack, thrift, donate, junk I have
acquired a distaste for ...stuff.

Now the craft-crisis is twofold.
I get mounds and piles and crates of joy
from making stuff.
Using my creativity in small ways keeps me from
going bonkers
(more bonkers)
So, that's good.

But in this moment all I want is nothing.
White everything. Space. Quiet.

I packed up 80% of the kids toys pre open house
with the plan to unpack them once we move house...
but I am awash with glee because
 I DON'T miss them
and the kids barely do.
So a pox on stuff !!!!
And, arguably that's bad for the making machine.

And so, I don't want to make stuff right now.
My kids will "need" stuff I get.
However,
my oldest is...'particular' so loathes it all right now.

So I will pause a little.

Pack some boxes,

play in puddles,

look at bugs,

witness some other peoples art,

slide,

climb

pick tiny berries

hang with self professed goof balls

and wait until the grand unpack.

I promise this is not a break up.
Just a slowing of pace.

 Truth be told,
if I don't make it, I'll probably break it.
So making will resume.

After more goofballs.

Thanks for showing up.

Summer: Bring It!

And it's summer time!

For those faire followers who have hung out
here at Fly & Nest for awhile,
it will come as a shock that I have made
a weather appropriate item.

Inexplicably,
when the heat of summer begins to bare down
I find myself time and time again, wool shopping.

Or,
when I'm 27 months pregnant,
heavy with child and light of charm
  my earlobes sweating...
I think nothing of piecing together
multi layered quilts that involve nimble body as well as acute wit.
Neither of which I possess in the aforementioned state.

I now dear reader find myself strangely willing
to over share with you a little
about my pleasures in bed...

Certainly, I've lost you now...:)

These pleasures typically involve sleep
and very very heavy duvets,
not realllly appropriate for summer-
or so my sweetie argues.

There are few things better to my mind than
drifting off to sleep crushed by the weight of a
1 million lb duvet.
Plant a fat house cat on top of the pile,
and swoon...I am at rest.

(backing)

If I lived in the snow 24-7, I would sleep all day
(my thousands of children would by fine)
But here, here in this land,
there is summer.
And, a sane sweetie,
and therefore....
a quilt.

(complete with the vital stuffy pocket)

Not for me
(for I have too many...see notation quilting and 3 pregnancies).

But for Her:

For she is the middle.
Not forgotten,
certainly, but the most easy going,
and therefore exploited as such.

For Nu, who I love and adore
who shall at last be crushed NO more
by duvet of heft and weight you see
she may not love this as much as me.

Tho curly of lock, and eye of blue

the wiggliest of child and sweetest are you.
A quilt all your own for summer and aft
and now off you must go, dear stinker, to bath!

Adieu to Home Sweet Home

Hello there!
It's me!
Sorry I've gone dark over here,
but really, truly,
it's been bonkers!

First we bought a house.
Then we sold a house.
(wroooong order)

And in between I packed up,
cleaned up, started dating a 1-800-junk company.
Beat a path to the thrift store donation table,
then another one,
then wash, rinse, repeat.

(Random picture of cute kid to keep you reading)

Then I wiped away a tear over the sorrows
of sending books to book heaven.

Did you know this?
No one wants textbooks.
I tried to sell, tried to give away,
tried to give away with a big smile...
and nothing.
 No one wants them.

I promise they made me smarter.
If only briefly.
sigh.

Putting our whole life away with little kids
and pretending we are super minimalist
swanky people.
Hillllllarious.

Apparently we fooled someone.
Or, the house fooled someone.

Once all of our crap was hidden away,
I didn't want to sell it anymore.

Goodbye old friend.

 I miss you already.

Building a team for the zombie apocalypse.

Nope,
this post will not live up to that title.

In unrelated news...

I was hanging with these punks
 today at the park.

Nu is wearing a new dress, and pants
I made long ago,
and Yu is wearing her Phoebe sweater.

For some reason I can't link to them,
or find them in my search function
(blast!)

And man, did they play the heck out
of their threads!

This one still doesn't stop moving.
She plays hard and sleeps hard.

She IS the definition of zest.

If there is a zombie or robot apocalypse
they will never catch her.
Phew.

That's one anyway.
I think the other one in the photo
would just be chewy at this point.

And the littlest one, never in the shadows
for long, is not one to be outdone.
She is super-determined to be in the thick
 of it all.

She's still a little pissed at gravity.

I keep trying to convince her I'm not in
charge of gravity.

She is not amused.

Craft attack takes a nap

In every way except financially, this effort
was a grand success.

I made lots of things in a very short window.

I got lots of great compliments and
fooled some seasoned craft show veterans
into thinking I wasn't the new kid.

I had most excellent support from
The Sweetie and a five pack of awesome girlfriends.
Thank you Sio, Carla, Sam, Nina, Laura, & psychically Christine.
I got visits from my little ones,
and even a visit from my 83 young mom
on Mother's Day.

I talked shop with a few folks
and got some good tips.
Financially...
I made bupkiss.
The old school folk said this was the worst/
strangest show they had been to.
Not many people, and those that came weren't so shoppy.
But,
I came, I saw. I made.
I'll try a few more times and see what's what.
LATER.
Now?
On to other things.
Here's a wrap up of some of the things I made:

Hand/machine embroidered/ applique wrist cuffs

and chokers.
Hoop canvases
Lapel pins, hair pins, covered buttons,
tissue cases, key lanyards/ fobs, tooth fairy pillows.

Crochet leaf necklaces,
hand stamped wooden memory/fish games
bean bags, wool ball and pom pom garlands.

A little bird mobile and a cloud mobile,
6 dresses, 9 dolls, 15 bonnets

Pennants/ bunting, crayon rolls & bookmarks

Possibly a few friends who now know me as
Pinky.
I can't think why.
 Thanks for stopping by!
